33 Best DIY Water Fountains You Will Love

Water Fountains are great to have around your home, especially since you already know that Water is the giver and bringer of life. After all, you must remember that for you to have been born into this world, your mother's water had to break in order for you to come forth; and on top of of that the earth along with your human body are comprised of about 70% water. So as you can see Beloved, having water in you and all around you is as natural as breathing, and so this is why today I am sharing with you how to create, have and keep water all around you no matter where you are. Because you need the calming and healing effects of water, you must have that sense of purity that water brings to you in washing everything clean, also you absolutely have to have water around in order to be re-energized so you can continue dealing with the harsh realities of life. So here we go with the 33 Best DIY Water Fountains You Will Love

A fountain Is composed of three things: Water, which flows up a pipe and trickles back down in a continuous cycle; a pump, which propels the water; and a piece of sculpture, over which the water flows. The sculpture can be built from any material that will withstand constant water.

Designing a DIY water feature can be a challenge if you are on a tight budget. It can be even more of a challenge if you are looking for a contemporary water feature to fit in with an updated garden space.

Here is a great solar powered water feature that combines the beauty of natural materials with a more modern design, and does it all for less that $30!
Supplies Needed:
Water tight container (Rubbermaid storage container was used here)
Fountain pump (we chose a solar powered pump)
Several flat concrete pavers, depending on the size of your container.
Rocks of different sizes
Plant tolerant of water, such as a water grass.

Step one:
Decide where to place your water feature. If you don’t have power nearby, consider a solar powered fountain pump. Keep in mind, solar pumps ONLY work while the sun is shining! If the sun even goes behind a cloud, the pump will temporarily stop.

If you plan to add live plants, make sure to site your water feature in the sun.
Trace the shape of the container onto the dirt, then use a shovel to remove enough dirt to sink the container level with the ground.

Step Two:
Add large rocks to the bottom of the water feature, then use the rocks to anchor your pump in place.

Step Three:
Lay the pavers along the edge of the water feature to cover the container edge, and to help hide the power cord. You can dig a trench for the power cord to hide it, or simply wind it behind plants to camouflage it.

Step Four:
Use flat stones to fill in the corners where the pavers don’t meet. Use your creativity to put your own twist on your design.

Step Five:
If you are using a water plant, place the entire pot in the water feature so that the rim will sit just above the water line. A black pot will be nearly invisible in the water.
Use more rocks to fill your water feature, hide the container and hold the plant in place. Try to use a mix of different colors, shapes and sizes.

Step Six:
Fill with water, plug in the pump and adjust the spray until it makes the sound and effect you are looking for. You can choose a fountain spray, or a natural bubbling over stones.
Clean your water feature on a regular basis, and use an algae inhibitor available at your home improvement store where they sell pond supplies.
Easy DIY water feature project for a contemporary garden… that anyone can do, on even a tight budget!

Step 1: Finding the Parts

Decide about how tall you want your fountain to be. Then look in thrift shops, yard sales and/or flea markets for the following items.
1 A base. This will be the tallest part of the fountain.
2 A basin, for the lower level. It will be and largest diameter basin.
(In the picture, it's the top of the table)
3 A spacer for between the lower and middle basins. This will be shorter than the base.
4 The middle basin, smaller in diameter than the lower basin.
5 Another spacer, shorter than the middle one.
6 Another basin, smaller in diameter than the middle one.
7 A decorative top for the water to flow out of.
You may want to get some extras for experimenting with when stacking the parts to see how they will look.

The items in the photo are ones I found.
The two items with question marks were not used.
Ideally, the basins would be like very shallow bowls, but these flatter ones work surprisingly well.

Of course, what you find will be different.
Maybe even better!

Step 2: Checking the "Look"

Now stack the pieces to see how they look together.
Try alternative parts, if you have some, to select the best looking group.
Think only about the shapes and sizes. The differences in materials and colors will be overcome by spray paint!

Step 3: Drilling Holes for the Tubing

Next drill holes in the centers of the parts for the water tubing to go through.
I drilled the holes slightly smaller than the tubing, expanding them with a regular bit until the tubing had a snug fit. The holes could be drilled slightly larger than the tubing and the gaps filled with a paintable sealant.

Step 4: Insert Water Tubing and Fasten Parts Together

This step required some improvising.
Although I drilled through the bottom of the table (as pictured for step 3), we decided to stand the table in the pond. If the tubing had gone out the bottom, it would have been too low for the pump.
Also the center spacer turned out to be made of rather hard metal and I decided not to drill through it. You can see the tubing passing along the left side, but it's barely noticeable when finished.
Also, because I couldn't put screws or bolts through the legs to attach to the basins, I used metal fasteners tightened over the legs and epoxy putty pressed into the gaps. (Picture 4a)
The top spacer seemed a little short, so I added another piece I found at home, held in place with epoxy putty. Again, these are barely, if at all, noticeable when finished. (Picture 4b)

Step 5: Painting the Fountain

To give a good finish and protect the parts, I chose to paint with a spray can paint made to cover any type of surface with a brown "Hammered" finish.
It took nearly two cans for two coats, several hours apart.

Of course, even with the leading brand of paint, the wood parts will not hold up indefinitely exposed to water, and you may want to use only metal or heavy plastic parts.
