Police Shootings, What We Lose When Officer Is Gone

Police Shootings, The Effects And Voids Left On Our Streets When Officer Is Gone. And it is important to remember that our Special Police Officers, no matter what your feelings are about them, are here to respond to dangerous situations at all times.

And whether they are right or wrong, or whether they are abusing their authority or not, have no bearing on the fact that their job puts their life on the line at all times. And I tell you my friend, if it wasn't for the Police patrolling our neighborhoods and answering call to disturbances of all sorts, you and I would not be able to go on with our lives. For we would constantly have to fight every criminal element ourselves for every little piece of property that we have.

An officer is justified in firing if the officer "has reasonable cause to believe" that an attacker could cause "death or serious bodily injury." Reasonable cause to shoot can be based on an officer seeing a suspect make a "furtive movement" as if to pull a gun, experts said.

These Are Just A Few Of The Headlines You will Read About: In just 24 hours, at least 11 officers were shot. The shootings included Sunday attacks at traffic stops in Indiana and Oregon, a Detroit police station shooting that wounded four officers, and a shootout at a Port Orchard, Wash., Wal-Mart that injured two deputies. On Monday morning, two officers were shot dead and a U.S. Marshal was wounded by a gunman in St. Petersburg, Fla. On Thursday, two Miami-Dade, Fla., detectives were killed by a murder suspect they were trying to arrest. "It's not a fluke," said Richard Roberts, spokesman for the International Union of Police Associations. "There's a perception among officers in the field that there’s a war on cops going on

Or Another Headline: During the gunfire, 27-year veteran Sgt. Tim Chapin, 51, was shot and killed. Officer Lorin Johnston was also wounded in the crossfire. He was treated and released at Erlanger Hospital. Chapin leaves behind a wife and two children.

Also for Police Officers who are killed in the line of duty, this is what is left behind: "This morning, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of this fallen hero: A son, a husband, a father of two young children, a veteran police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, working to keep Phoenix safe. The officer’s fellow first responders also are on my mind and in my heart.

Police shootings are emotionally and politically charged events, fraught with forensic and legal difficulties. Officers say civilians cannot fathom what it is like to be in a shooting. Eyewitnesses contradict each other. Officers often can't remember how many times they fired. Top District officials must balance law and policy against the imperative that police officers not feel intimidated in using their weapons to protect themselves or others.

And this is the View that some have: getreal2105 said on May 27, 2010 at 11:03 AM

We must stop glorifying these criminals everyday. We should never see this mans face. The NY City Bomber had his picture (World Wide) in the news for weeks. Do you think this makes other young criminals glorify these people, as they get more air time than our own President. Our society needs to crack down on the news media who glorifies these criminals. This attention will motivate other criminals who want their 15 minutes and want to be on national news. These criminals should never have their pictures released, we must change this and even if it takes a new law. The kid who robs a bank gets air time but the kid who gets straight (A's) gets no attention, what's wrong with our society.

Police officers can be an insular group, and are often more reluctant to talk to outsiders or to show "weakness" in front of their own peers than are other emergency service and public safety workers. Officers typically work alone or with a single partner, as opposed to firefighters or paramedics, who are trained to have more of a team mentality. Even those civilians who have no great love for cops have to admit that theirs is a difficult, dangerous, and often thankless job. Police officers regularly deal with the most violent, impulsive, and predatory members of society, put their lives on the line, and confront cruelties and horrors that the rest of us view from the sanitized distance of our newspapers and TV screens. So Ask yourself Dear Friend, would you want the Job?. But in the meantime, Learn how to end a Violent Attack in Your Home Or Car:
